Dead Boys Detectives marked Netflix’s first attempt to expand The Sandman universe, but it suffered the same fate as many of the streamer’s beloved shows. The horror buddy comedy won’t continue its run since Netflix canceled it after a single season.

Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, “the brains” and “the brawn” behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency, were first introduced in an issue of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman comics. They are teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death and decide to stick together as ghosts and solve mysteries by each other’s side.

George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri led the cast of this show, and they were joined by Kassius Nelson, Yuyu Kitamura, Jenn Lyon, Briana Cuoco, David Iacono, Lukas Gage, and Ruth Connell in supporting roles, plus Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Donna Preston reprising their roles from The Sandman.

Steve Yockey created this series for Netflix and served as its co-showrunner alongside Beth Schwartz. They also executive produced the series alongside Greg Berlanti, Jeremy Carver, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, and Gaiman.

Despite the cancelation of Dead Boys Detectives, The Sandman universe will live on on Netflix. The original series has been renewed for Season 2, and it kicked off production with several new cast members, including Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, and Barry Sloane as The Prodigal.
