Virgin River is one of Netflix’s most popular comfort shows, and there’s more where it came from! The streamer greenlit a prequel series set years before the events of the original drama, which shifts the focus to Mel Monroe’s parents.

The Virgin River universe will expand with this promising series, which explores the origin story of Mel’s parents Sarah and Everett. Their romance mirrors Mel’s own story because her mother Sarah also fell in love with a man from the picturesque Northern California town, named Everett Reed.

John Allen Nelson portrayed Everett in the Season 5 finale “Father Christmas”, when it was revealed he’s Mel’s biological father. The prequel will focus on the younger versions of these characters, and casting is still underway, so it remains unclear if Nelson will return.

Virgin River showrunner Patrick Sean Smith wrote the prequel series for Netflix, but he’s also planning to tell us more about Mel’s parents in the upcoming Season 6.

“What we’re exploring more in Season 6 is who Everett Reid is, what his backstory is, what his connection to Virgin River was when he met her mom and then also what it is today,” Smith told Deadline.

Season 6 of Virgin River is filming in Vancouver, Canada, and it will premiere on Netflix in 2025.
