It’s been over three decades since A Different World ended its run, and Netflix is now planning to bring it back. The streaming giant is plotting a sequel series that centers on Dwayne and Whitley’s daughter from the original ’90s sitcom.
A Different World was conceived as a spin-off of The Cosby Show, which centered on Lisa Bonet’s character Denise Huxtable as she goes off to college. Bonet exited the series after one season, but A Different World eventually ran for six, after shifting focus to other students attending Hillman College, a fictional historically black college in Virginia.
Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison led the cast of later seasons as Dwayne and Whitley, alongside Dawnn Lewis, Glynn Turman, Cory Tyler, Lou Myers, Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The sequel series would center on their daughter, following a similar route as Netflix’s That ‘90s Show, developed under The Carsey-Werner Company banner, just like A Different World.
The sequel series would be set 30 years after the original show, and it hails from writer and executive producer Felicia Pride, whose credits include Grey’s Anatomy and “Queen Sugar. Debbie Allen, Mandy Summers, Tom Werner, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Reggie Bythewood are joining her as executive producers.
