David O. Russell is directing and executive producing the Apple TV+ series Bananas, and its cast will be one star-studded affair. Oscar Isaac and Ana De Armas landed lead roles in this high-profile project, and they’ll also serve as executive producers.

According to Deadline, Apple TV+ has landed this project “in a competitive situation” and not much is known about its plot at this point in time. Its title Bananas is reportedly a reference to the term “banana republic”, used to describe politically and economically unstable countries.

The five-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker David O. Russell is attached to direct and executive produce this series, which hails from writer and creator Carolina Paiz (Orange is the New Black).

Bananas will mark Ana De Armas’ English-language TV debut, but she’s no stranger to collaborating with some of Hollywood’s leading directors. She rose to prominence with roles in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 and Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, and went on to star in No Time to Die, The Gray Man, Ghosted, and Blonde, which earned her an Oscar nomination.

Oscar Isaac had already led several acclaimed TV projects – he won an Emmy Award for Show Me a Hero and received acclaim for Scenes from a Marriage and Moon Knight. On the movie side, he’s best known as the star of Inside Llewyn Davis, Ex Machina, Dune, and the Star Wars franchise, and will next be seen in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
