Legendary Entertainment is committed to expanding the Pacific Rim franchise, and they’re plotting another high-profile project set in this universe. The Pacific Rim prequel series is in the works as a part of Eric Heisserer’s first-look television deal with the studio.

Pacific Rim is set in the distant future, where an inter-dimensional rift at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean opened up a passage to colossal sea monsters. In an attempt to stop these monsters from entering our world and attacking humanity, humans created giant fighting robots known as Jaegers.

The Pacific Rim franchise produced two films, a video game, and an animated series, and it’s now getting an origin story series. This project is developed under the first-look deal between Legendary Entertainment and Eric Heisserer, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker whose writing credits include Lights Out, Arrival, and Bird Box.

Jason Clodfelter, president of Legendary Television, announced their new deal with Heisserer, and described him as a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself.

“We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise,” said Clodfelter in a statement.
