Apple TV+ recently renewed Presumed Innocent for Season 2, but the hit legal thriller will be missing one major star when it returns. Peter Sarsgaard said he’s not planning to return for the next chapter of this story because he sees himself as “a one-season person”.

Presumed Innocent was led by Sarsgaard’s brother-in-law, Jake Gyllenhaal, as a federal prosecutor Rusty Sabich, who became the prime suspect in the murder of his colleague after their volatile affair came to light. The first season became quite a hit for Apple TV+, and the streamer was quick to renew it for Season 2.

Sarsgaard isn’t planning to return for the next chapter, and he explained his decision in a recent interview with IndieWire.

“I’m not really that interested in sequels. I think I’ve only ever done one season of anything. I think I’m a one-season person… There’s a very valuable thing in saying goodbye because then you have to look for another source of inspiration and then you change,” said Sarsgaard.

In addition to Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard, the first season of Presumed Innocent also starred Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, Elizabeth Marvel, Renate Reinsve, O-T Fagbenle, Lily Rabe, and Noma Dumezweni. It remains to be seen if any of them will return because Season 2 will reportedly “unfold around a suspenseful, brand new case.”
