Pheobe Waller-Bridge has finally revealed why the protagonist’s real name in Fleabag is never shared with the audience.
The award-winning TV series Fleabag stars Waller-Bridge as the sassy and hilarious lead. We learn an awful lot about the character throughout the show, but we never learn her real name.
In an interview on This Morning, Waller-Bridge shared the meaning behind the name Fleabag. And it does carry a deeper meaning.
“A fleabag motel is something that’s a bit rough around the edges and a bit of a mess,” she explained. “I wanted to call her that because I wanted her persona and her outside aesthetic to give the impression that she was completely in control of her life, when actually, underneath, she’s not.”
She also revealed that “Flea” or “Fleabag” was one of her nicknames growing up. This suggests that the character is a little more based on Waller-Bridge’s personal experiences than we may have assumed.
