It’s been almost two decades since Reba McEntire led her own sitcom, and she’s finally plotting her big TV comeback. She reunited with the team behind Reba to create a new comedy pilot for NBC, in which she’d play the lead role.
Kevin Abbott, Michael Hanel, and Mindy Schultheis, who executive produced McEntire’s hit series Reba, all came back to work on the pilot for this series. Julie Abbott would also be credited as executive producer of this NBC comedy, developed in collaboration with Universal Television.
The multi-cam project doesn’t have a working title yet, but it would center on a woman who inherits her father’s restaurant, only to discover she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.
Seeing McEntire plotting her TV comeback makes total sense since she repeatedly talked about bringing Reba back. She eventually set her sights on a different project because bringing back the original cast proved to be a problem.
“The TV business changes so much that sometimes reboots are hot and then they’re not. Plus getting everyone scheduled together is also hard… I guess timing and schedule will dictate that in the future,” she told Deadline in 2022.
This comedy series isn’t McEntire’s only collaboration with NBC—she’s currently serving as the coach on their competition series The Voice.
