Ruby Rose Leaves “Batwoman,” CW Has to Recast Lead Role

Ruby Rose in "Batwoman"

Ruby Rose, the star of the CW’s Batwoman, has decided to leave the series in a surprise move ahead of the second season.

While the reason for her exit remains unclear, the show will go on with a new lead.“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” said Rose in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew, and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

Rose was cast as the lead, playing the first gay lead character, male or female, of a live-action superhero series. The show is committed to casting another LGBTQ actress in the role.

In January, the CW renewed Batwoman for the 2020-2021 season. Rose had emergency surgery for two herniated discs back in September and questions surrounding how she sustained these injuries emerged. It is known that the injury was related to a stunt she did while filming Season 1. A source told Variety that her decision to leave “had nothing to do with her health or injury.”
