From David Tennant to Jodie Whitaker, we’ve seen many amazing stars put their own spin on Doctor Who and Ncuti Gatwa is the next one in line! The star of the Netflix teen drama is set to play the Time Lord in the popular sci-fi drama, becoming the first black actor to do so.

Gatwa will play the fourteenth incarnation of the Doctor as the beloved series marks its 60th anniversary in 2023, and he couldn’t be more excited to join forces with the returning showrunner Russell T Davies.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared… Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true,” said Gatwa in his casting announcement.

Davies echoed his words, saying it’s an honor to work with Gatwa and described him as a “bright and bold and brilliant” talent. BBC’s CCO Charlotte Moore also had nothing but words of praise for the three-time BAFTA TV Award nominee and described him as a “striking and fearless young actor whose talent and energy will set the world alight”.

Gatwa will follow in the footsteps of Jodie Whitaker, who made history as the first female Doctor in 2017 and will make her final appearance on the show later this year.
