Shōgun was originally developed as a limited series, but its massive success made FX and Hulu rethink its future. This historical drama set in feudal Japan is coming back for more installments, as FX and Hulu eye a renewal for two more seasons.
According to its official logline, Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war, and it centers on Lord Yoshii Toranaga, who’s fighting for his life as his enemies unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.
Shōgun received a lot of renewal buzz in recent weeks after it switched its Emmy category from limited series to drama. Renewal became inevitable after it was reported that the show’s producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada closed a deal to return as Lord Yoshii Toranaga.
In addition to Sanada, Shōgun also stars Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido.
The next two seasons of this series will also mark the return of several creatives who made Shōgun a success, including co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo. Hulu and FX are also working closely with the estate of Shōgun author James Clavell to develop two more chapters of this story.
