Silent Witness is about to enter its 22nd season, and it is still fresh as ever and richly captivating.

Simon Rimmer asked Silent Witness star Emilia Fox how the series manages to capture audiences after all these years.

“Good writing, that’s what it’s about,” the actress said. “And picking subjects which are current and keeping it mixed up with having a thriller, or having an action one, or having one which is very, very medically led.”

She added: “I think that the interest is finding the clues through the bodies, so it makes it a bit different to the normal detective drama. So you’re really having a behind-the-scenes look at how to solve crime and they try and keep that as true to life as possible.”

One of the ways the series stays fresh is by staying up to date with current social topics and issues. That’s why the new season is about “identity.”

Emilia says: “It starts with gender identity, and then it becomes about community identity and the effect that these new drugs are having on families, on kids, on schools. Then there’s dismembered bodies, and that’s about identity.”

The upcoming season of Silent Witness will arrive in January 2019.
