The second season of The Serpent Queen is coming to Starz in just a few days, and the network teased it with a new promo clip. Samantha Morton returns as Catherine de’ Medici, the ruthless queen who ruled France with an iron fist for three decades.

The first season saw the young Florentine royal being married into the 16th-century French court at 14 after being orphaned, while Season 2 will see her fully coming into her own. As her son Charles IX comes of age, Catherine de Medici becomes the Queen Regent of France in Season 2 and must do everything in her power to avoid the civil war.

Season 2 will also see Catherine going head-to-head with Queen Elizabeth I of England (Minnie Driver), another powerful woman who carved her space in the 16th century.

Driver is one of the most important additions to Season 2, alongside Angus Imrie, Emma McDonald, Stanley Morgan, Philippine Velge, Rosalie Craig, Isobel Jesper Jones, Bill Milner, Ashley Thomas, and Alexandre Willaume. Amrita Acharia, Barry Atsma, Enzo Cilenti, Kiruna Stamell, Nicholas Burns, and Danny Kirrane are some of the actors reprising their roles from Season 1.

Season 2 of The Serpent Queen will premiere on Starz on July 12, and it will feature eight new episodes.
