“Stranger Things” Star Shares Devastating Hopper Theory

David Harbour in "Stranger Things"

*Season 3 spoilers ahead*

If you’re all caught up with Stranger Things, you will be all too familiar with Jim Hopper’s heartbreaking ending. Hopper sacrificed himself in the season three finale, hoping he would be reunited with his daughter, Sarah, in the afterlife.

Hopper actor David Harbour has now reflected on his character’s ending and has shared a poignant theory on his sacrifice, explaining why Hopper may have acted as he did.

“One way it could be viewed is he has to die to make it up to [his daughter] Sara and see her in the afterlife,” Harbour told LA Times. “The other view is that because of this newfound relationship with Eleven [Millie Bobby Brown], he needs to shed his skin, make a sacrifice that allows his character to re-emerge.”

He added: “He was finally able to really take a bullet for a child, which he had never been able to do because Sara died of cancer. I think there’s a perfection to it.”

Stranger Things Season Three is available on Netflix now.
