House of the Dragon did a great job reviving the Game of Thrones franchise, and expectations are running high for its second season. The first teaser trailer is finally here, and it offers glimpses of the Dance of the Dragons, the war of succession that led to the demise of House Targaryen.

Set almost two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based on George R. R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen.

Season 2 will take place in the wake of King Viserys’ death, which marked the start of the Dance of the Dragons. Two rivaling factions of the Targaryen family, led by Viserys’ first-born daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen and his wife Queen Alicent Hightower and their children, will war over the Iron Throne in the upcoming second season.

Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Rhys Ifans are set to return in Season 2. They’ll be joined by several newcomers to Westeros, including Gayle Rankin, Simon Russell Beale, Freddie Fox, Abubakar Salim, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor, and Vincent Regan.

The second season of House of the Dragon will feature a total of eight episodes, set to premiere in mid-2024 on HBO.
