We’ve seen many hit movies inspire spin-off series in recent years, and Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli is the next one in line. A prequel series inspired by the original movie is being developed as we speak, and it will be led by the Star Wars actor John Boyega.

The Book of Eli follows Washington’s resilient nomad Eli, who takes a harrowing journey across post-apocalyptic America in an attempt to deliver a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation to a safe location.

The original film also starred Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, and Jennifer Beals, and it was directed by the Hughes Brothers. They’ll return as executive producers of the prequel series alongside Boyega and the original writer Gary Whitta, who’ll also serve as its creator and writer.

The spin-off series will take us 30 years before the events of the original film, and it’s expected to chronicle the aftermath of the nuclear catastrophe that destroyed Eli’s world. Alcon Entertainment is producing the project and taking it to select premium buyers.

John Boyega is best known as the star of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and his recent credits include films The Woman King and They Cloned Tyrone. He also appeared in Steve McQueen’s series Small Axe, for which he won his first Golden Globe Award.
