The series that was born out of controversy will now get another chance to grow.
ABC has decided to renew The Connors for a second season.
The show, starring John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Ames McNamara, and Laurie Metcalf, was, of course, originally the revival of Roseanne. But following Roseanne Barr’s Twitter episode in which she made racially-insulting remarks about former aide to Barack Obama, Valerie Jarrett, the show was cancelled. It was then decided to revive it — sans Roseanne — focusing on the rest of the Connor family.
After debuting to excellent ratings, the series held its place at the top of the viewership log, bringing in an average of 9.5 million viewers per episode and becoming the network’s highest-rated new show.
“We are proud to be continuing the story of the iconic Conner family,” said ABC Entertainment president, Karey Burke. “This team is fearless in their willingness to tackle contemporary issues with humor and heart, and I have no doubt they will continue to outdo themselves.”
The five main stars have all signed new deals, with additional cast members to be announced soon.
