The Emmys Vetoes a Host for 2019

The Emmys seem to be following in the Oscars’ footsteps.

This year’s Academy Awards ceremony was the first in three decades not to have a host.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle actor Kevin Hart was originally chosen as the show’s host in December 2018, but withdrew from the role after homophobic statements he made years ago emerged.

As a result, the 91st Academy Awards had no main host, but rather a selection of presenters who introduced the various categories.

That now seems to be the avenue the television awards are going down, for the sake of the series nominated.

“We’ve been working hard at the Emmys, and The Emmys will not have a host this year,” said FOX Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier at the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour.

“What’s interesting about this year to me is how many amazing shows we’re saying goodbye to. We’ve got Game of Thrones, our own Empire, Veep and Big Bang Theory. So this is new to me, I’ve never worked on the Emmys before. You really have to look at all the trade offs. If you have a host and an opening number, that’s 15-20 minutes you can’t use to salute the shows.”

This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards will be held on September 22nd.
