Norman Lear scooped up a Creative Arts Emmy Award on Saturday night, but he received another honor as well.
The Emmy in question was for the sitcom special Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and The Jeffersons, starring Woody Harrelson and Jamie Foxx, which Lear executive produced alongside late night television host Jimmy Kimmel.
Lear’s win at the age of 97 years and 49 days makes him the oldest Emmy Award winner of all time!
The title was previously held by Sir Richard Attenborough, who is 93 years old.
When asked backstage at the ceremony about his age, the nonagenarian said, “The fact of my life is, I don’t think about it a lot.” He then referred to himself as 96 before being corrected by Kimmel. “I like waking up in the morning,” Lear quipped.
The Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special joins his 4 Primetime Emmy Awards, which he won in 1972 and 1974.
