The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will return to Prime Video for its second season this year, and the masterminds behind it already know what the future holds. Amazon Prime Video recently struck an overall deal with showrunners, Patrick McKay and JD Payne, who are currently working on Season 3 storylines.
Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s beloved book series The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2022, and its second season was a long time coming. It’s expected to premiere later this year, and Amazon is planning to continue their collaboration with its showrunners beyond Season 2.
Patrick McKay and JD Payne signed a new exclusive three-year overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, and the company’s head of television, Vernon Sander, is looking forward to continuing their collaboration.
“We can’t wait for Prime Video customers to experience the epic adventure and high-stakes drama that JD and Patrick are continuing to build throughout season two and beyond. Naturally, the studio is thrilled to extend our overall deal with these brilliant creative minds,” said Sanders in a statement.
The Rings of Power is yet to be renewed for Season 3, and the writers’ room isn’t open just yet, but Payne and McKay are already working on the initial story outline.
