Robert Kirkman has revealed why he made the decision to kill off Rick Grimes in the comic books.

Before The Walking Dead became the most popular show on ABC, Robert Kirkman published a series of comics about a Kentucky deputy named Rick Grimes who awakens from a coma in the midst of a zombie apocalypse. In the comics, Rick is shot to death and returns briefly as a zombie before being killed all over again. It’s really not the ending fans would have chosen for the series’ protagonist.

Speaking with Comicbook.com, at The Walking Dead season 10 premiere, Kirkman revealed why he chose such a controversial ending for Rick.

“Rick Grimes fixed the world to the point where he was so safe that he could be killed by the weakest character in the book,” he explained. “It’s a statement on how good of a job he did.”

He added: “At no point in the history of the comic could he have been killed that way. It wasn’t until the very end that he was able to relax.”

The Walking Dead season 10 premieres Monday, October 6 on AMC.
