True Detective: Night Country will come into this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards with 19 nominations, and its showrunner Issa López is happy to be reaping the fruits of her labor. She said that the show’s Emmy success inspired her to go bolder and weirder in Season 5.

López took the reins from Nic Pizzolatto as a showrunner of the fourth season of HBO’s anthology crime drama, which took us to Ennis, Alaska this time around. It starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives trying to solve the mysterious disappearance of eight men from a local research station.

HBO was quick to renew True Detective for Season 5 after Night Country became the most-watched installment of the show to date. López signed a new overall deal with HBO and agreed to return as a showrunner, describing this series as the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of her entire creative life.

Following the show’s Emmy success, López sat down with The Los Angeles Times to discuss her journey and dropped some hints about Season 5.

“It makes me so excited about this new season because of everything I learned that I can use and go deeper and go bolder and be weirder. I can’t wait. I’m very excited about the job I’m doing right now,” she told The Los Angeles Times.
