The fourth season of True Detective was a long time coming, and it’s off to a strong start! True Detective: Night Country premiered to rave reviews on Sunday night, and it attracted two million viewers across Max and linear telecasts on HBO.

The new season of True Detective is trailing behind Euphoria (2.4 million viewers for its Season 2 debut) and Succession (2.3 million viewers for its Season 4 debut), but it still managed to surpass some of HBO’s biggest hits, including The White Lotus (1.5 million viewers for its Season 2 debut).

To make the whole thing even better, the release of Night Country increased interest in the previous seasons of True Detective. HBO reported this anthology series topped the list of the most viewed titles on Max in the week leading up to the Season 4 premiere, as viewers tried to catch up with the previous seasons.

True Detective: Night Country stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives trying to solve the disappearance of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Alaska, where they must confront the darkness that they carry in themselves. It premiered on HBO on January 14, and it will feature a total of six episodes, directed by Issa López.
