Season 5 spoilers ahead!
Just like Game of Thrones, hit TV show Vikings does not shy away from killing off major characters whenever they please. The show revolves around power struggles and is hardly short of violence, so collateral damage is inevitable.
In season 5, however, a character was killed off that nobody was anticipating to leave the show any time soon. “The Seer” has always been a staple character who has been untouchable. In a moment of outrage, Ivar slaughters The Seer when he does not foretell the prophecy he desires.
“It raises the question, can you actually ever kill a man who is possibly dead already?” creator Michael Hirst told Variety. “It’s huge for the people immediately around Ivar. To me, it was more to do with what Ivar felt that he was capable of doing as the supreme ruler. What he does or tries to do is so shocking and unexpected that it says more about Ivar’s ambitions and what’s happening in Ivar’s head.”

The Seer has always been a crucial member of the show and his prophecies often drive the characters to action. Fans are now debating the extent to which his death will impact the future of the show and whether his return is possible.
