TV shows inspired by the hit 2000s movies have experienced a true boom in recent years, and Netflix is plotting another one. The streaming giant is working on a new version of Man on Fire, and they’ve tapped Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to play the lead role in this project.
Mateen will lead the series as a skilled special forces mercenary John Creasy, who used to survive even the most desolate of situations, before being plagued with intense PTSD.
“Determined to overcome his personal demons, he sets out on a path to redemption. But, before he can adjust to this new life, he finds himself back in the fire, fighting harder than ever,” reads Netflix’s official logline.
Man on Fire is based on A. J. Quinnell’s book series, which previously inspired two film adaptations, led by Scott Glenn in 1987 and Denzel Washington in 2004. Kyle Killen (Fear Street) serves as writer and showrunner of Netflix’s new version, while Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) will direct the first two episodes.
They’ll both executive produce it alongside the leading man Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. He’s best known as the Emmy-winning star of HBO’s Watchmen, in addition to starring in The Get Down and Black Mirror, plus films Aquaman, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Candyman, and The Matrix Resurrections.
