The post “Beef” & “A Small Light” Among 2024 Television Academy Honors appeared first on watchingtvnow.com.
]]>Television Academy chair Cris Abrego announced this year’s list of winners, explaining they aimed to celebrate programs that raise awareness about complex issues facing society.
“This year’s honorees have leveraged the medium’s power to drive meaningful conversation and create social impact. We honor their commitment to authentic, evocative storytelling that tackles important social issues that affect the global audience,” said in a statement.
Netflix’s eight-time Emmy-winning limited series Beef is one of the shows being honored for its honest portrayal of loneliness and depression in the modern world. The streamer’s teen drama Heartstopper will also be honored for celebrating the spectrum of queer love.
A Small Light, a war drama about a Dutch woman who risked her life to shelter Anne Frank’s family during World War II, is also one of the recipients. Four non-scripted series – 1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed, The 1619 Project, Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court, and Lakota Nation vs. United States – will also be celebrated at the ceremony on May 23 at Citizen News in Hollywood.

]]>Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody, said they’re dedicated to honoring the most compelling stories across the media landscape and praised this year’s nominees for crafting bold stories that continue to inspire us and challenge us to do better.
“Each of the 68 nominees this year deserve to be recognized for telling unique stories that leave a profound impact in capturing our imaginations. From exposing injustice to capturing the struggles and triumphs of inspirational figures across the world, these extraordinary nominees demonstrate the power and beauty of compelling storytelling,” said Jones in a statement.
The list of nominees this year covers television, podcasts/radio, news, documentary, arts, children’s/youth, public service, and multimedia programming categories, but the one that piqued our interest is the entrainment field.
FX’s The Bear, HBO’s The Last of Us, Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, and Amazon Freeve’s Jury Duty made the cut in this category. The list of contenders also includes Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai, Lupin, and The Fall of the House of Usher, Prime Video’s Dead Ringers, Peacock’s Poker Face, FX’s Reservation Dogs, and HBO’s Somebody Somewhere and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, along with the film Reality.

]]>The final season of the HBO series Succession came into the night as the main contender for the best drama series, and it lived up to the hype. It defeated the likes of The Crown, The Curse, The Diplomat, and The Last of Us to take the trophy home.
Despite losing the best drama award to Succession, HBO’s adaptation of the hit video game The Last of Us was named the best new series, beating The Diplomat, Jury Duty, Poker Face, and Shirking.
The Bear collected one more award for the best comedy series at the WGA Awards, after dominating the Emmys and the Golden Globes. The list of contenders in this field also included Abbott Elementary, Barry, Jury Duty, and Only Murders in the Building.
As for Beef, Netflix’s smash hit collected one more award for the best limited series, beating A Murder at the End of the World, Daisy Jones & The Six, Lessons in Chemistry, and the latest season of Fargo.
After being hit with a major delay caused by the writers’ strike, the WGA Awards returned to Los Angeles on April 14.

]]>The first edition of Gotham TV Awards will take place on June 4 in New York City, and awards will be handed out in eight categories. They’ll primarily focus on celebrating new shows and their best performances, judging by the categories they’re launching the ceremony with.
In addition to breakthrough comedy series, breakthrough drama series, breakthrough limited series, and breakthrough nonfiction series, the Gotham TV Awards will be handed out in three acting fields – outstanding performance in a comedy series, outstanding performance in a drama series, and outstanding performance in a limited series. An Audience Award will also be there to give voice to the people.
The Gotham Awards featured several TV categories in recent years, and the executive director Jeffrey Sharp explained they decided to launch a separate ceremony after it became clear their TV awards could have an even greater impact.
“We sense a unique opportunity to widen our reach by expanding our competitive categories and tributes in a show focused solely on creators of episodic TV, limited series, and non-theatrical streaming movies,” said Sharp in a press release.

]]>The Last of Us was the most-nominated show at this year’s Critics Choice Super Awards, and it lived up to the hype. It was one of the nominees for the best superhero series, and it defeated the likes of Gen V, Loki, Ahsoka, and Superman & Lois to take it home.
Its leading duo Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey both collected two awards in their respective categories, for best actor/actress in a horror series and superhero series. The Last of Us was also named the best horror series, while the guest star Melanie Lynskey picked up a trophy for the best villain in a series, limited, series, or a TV film.
Black Mirror was the only other show with multiple wins at this year’s Critics Choice Super Awards. “Joan Is Awful”, the opening episode of Season 6, won the trophy for best sci-fi fantasy series, limited series, or a TV movie, while its star Annie Murphy was honored for her lead performance.

]]>The Crown will get its last chance to compete at the BAFTAs after ending its run on Netflix last year. Its last chapter is in the running for eight awards, but the best drama series shockingly isn’t one of them since only The Gold, Happy Valley, Slow Horses, and Top Boy made the cut.
Despite failing to score a nod for the biggest award of the night, The Crown is in the running for four craft awards and four more acting awards, thanks to the amazing performances of its cast members Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville, and Salim Daw.
Black Mirror will also come into the ceremony as one of the top contenders. Its episode “Demon 79” scored seven nods, including the best limited drama series and best leading actress (Anjana Vasan), plus additional five nominations in the craft field.
The 2024 British Academy Television Awards are scheduled to take place at the Royal Festival Hall in London on May 12, and they’ll air live on BBC One.

]]>After being pushed to December due to Hollywood strikes last year, the upcoming ceremony will take place on June 7 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. CBS will broadcast the ceremony after striking a two-year telecast deal, and the host is yet to be announced.
Adam Sharp, president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, confirmed the new ceremony date and said they’re looking forward to going back to hosting the festivities in June.
“We eagerly anticipate our return in June as we once again partner with CBS to recognize the exceptional and talented individuals who make daytime television great. We’re thrilled to kick off our second half-century of the Daytime Emmys,” said Sharp.
The Primetime Emmys will also follow suit and return to their regular date this awards season. The ceremony will take place on September 15 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, while the nominations will be announced on July 17.

Its leading lady Ali Wong collected the award for the best lead performance in a new scripted series, beating the tough competition in her co-star Steven Yeun, plus Swarm’s Dominique Fishback, I’m a Virgo’s Jharrel Jerome, and The Last of Us’ Bella Ramsey, among others.
Despite failing to win in any of the major categories, HBO’s The Last of Us picked up two awards thanks to its amazing cast. Nick Offerman won the trophy for the best supporting performance in a new scripted series, while Keivonn Montreal Woodard collected the award for the best breakthrough performance in a new scripted series.
The 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards returned to their long-time venue the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, California on February 25. Saturday Night Live alum Aidy Bryant hosted the ceremony, which was streamed live on IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels.

Its stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri also won individual awards for the best actor and actress in a comedy series.
Succession ended its award season run with another win for the outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series. Shockingly enough, this was the only award its cast walked away with since individual drama awards went to Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) and Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown), who defeated Succession’s Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook.
Netflix’s limited series was also among the top winners with two awards. Its leading duo Steven Yeun and Ali Wong were honored with trophies for outstanding performance by actor and actress in a television movie or limited series.
