]]>The Sympathizer draws inspiration from Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, about a communist spy who kept reporting to the Viet Cong even after the Vietnam War was over. Robert Downey Jr. plays several antagonist roles in this project, and we’ve seen him portray a CIA agent, a shady congressman, and a self-absorbed director in the first episode alone!
Park Chan-Wook initially considered several great actors for different roles, including Josh Brolin and Mark Ruffalo, but he decided to only stick to one because he felt this idea would subvert his original intention for these characters.
“I came to realize these guys are actually one and the same because they’re doing all different kinds of things, but essentially they’re representing America as a whole… So I thought I would flip the script and that one actor will be playing all these roles,” he told Deadline.
The Sympathizer debuted on Max on April 14, and it will feature a total of seven episodes streaming weekly.

]]>Kit Harington spent almost a decade playing Jon Snow and earned two Emmy nominations for his portrayal. He was the driving force behind the potential sequel series, which was first announced in 2022, but this project seems to be dead in the water.
He addressed its future in a recent interview with Screen Rent and said it’s “firmly on the shelf” for the time being.
“Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no,” said Harington.
Despite scrapping the potential Jon Snow spin-off, HBO is going full steam ahead with several other Game of Thrones projects. House of the Dragon will return for its second season this year, while Knight of the Seven Kingdoms cast its leading duo just last week.

]]>According to Variety, one of the early scripts saw Rue’s Zendaya relegated to the background and working as a private detective, but HBO was quick to veto this storyline.
Variety also claims that Zendaya pitched a storyline following Rue as a twentysomething woman working as a pregnancy surrogate, but HBO dismissed it, saying its tone didn’t feel like Euphoria.
Variety’s report is not all bad news, and they claim that Season 3 was supposed to feature “very compelling” arcs for Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi’s characters Cassie and Nate.
One of the reasons why Sam Levinson went into overhaul mode with the scripts was the sudden death of Angus Cloud, whose character Fezco figured heavily into the initial Season 3 storyline.
Variety also claims that HBO explored the idea of continuing the story without Sam Levinson or wrapping it up in the form of a movie or several TV specials. These plans eventually fell apart because the show’s cast was committed to wrapping up Euphoria with Levinson.

]]>Sweeney recently set down for an in-depth interview with GQ Magazine to discuss some of her recent projects. We saw her lead hit rom-com Anyone but You last year, before starring in Madame Web and Immaculate, but most people still associated her with Cassie Howard from Euphoria.
Its creator Sam Levinson really kept the fans waiting for the teen drama’s third season, but the wait will soon be over. Sweeney said that the production will kick off in the next two months, adding that “people will be really amazed with what season three becomes.”
It remains unclear if Euphoria will continue beyond Season 3, especially given the cast’s busy schedules, but Sweeney is open to the possibility.
“That one I honestly don’t know. I think that if there’s more story to tell with Cassie then, yes, because I do love that role and I love the community, but it’s whatever does the story justice,” she told GQ.

]]>Edebiri recently sat down with Vogue for an in-depth interview and revealed she directed an episode of the upcoming third season of The Bear, set to come out this June.
“The first time I met Chris [Storer], I was 21, and he was like, ‘You’re a director.’ I was like, ‘Mind your business, bro,’ But then last season, he said, ‘Come to set, just come to set, see what happens.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, OK. Yeah. I think I want to do this,’” she told Vogue.
Having Edebiri direct one of the episodes of The Bear will mark a major creative shake-up for the FX series. Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo previously directed all episodes of this series, with the exception of the Copenhagen-set Season 2 episode “Honeydew”, directed by Ramy Youssef.
Edebiri received acclaim for her role in The Bear and collected several accolades ahead of its third season, starting with a Golden Globe, a Primetime Emmy Award, and two SAG Awards, including one individual prize and ensemble prize with the rest of the cast.

]]>Martin-Green dropped some hints about the show’s big finale in a recent interview with IndieWire. She said that the complicated relationship between her character Burnham and David Ajala’s Book will be one of the pivotal points of Season 5.
“Someone did say to me, this season is about relationships and I thought that was very interesting. And so you’re not just gonna see those dynamics play out between Burnham and Book. They’re played out between everyone,” Martin-Green told IndieWire.
Ajala echoed her statement in a separate interview, saying that Burnham and Book have a love that is worth fighting for, but added they’ll face some challenges because “In the course of true love, nothing runs smooth.”
Star Trek: Discovery will return for its final 10-episode season on Paramount+ on April 4. In addition to Martin-Green and Ajala, Season 5 will also star Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Blu del Barrio, and Callum Keith Rennie.

True Detective: Night Country was created for HBO by the new showrunner Issa López, and it starred Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives forced to confront the darkness that they carry in themselves while trying to solve the disappearance of the eight men working at Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska.
HBO renewed this anthology series for its fifth season after Night Country became its most-watched installment, and López agreed to return as a showrunner after striking an overall deal with the network.

Fielder co-created the show alongside Benny Safdie, who recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and the acclaimed director praised their work during a recent Q&A.
“Congratulations on an incredible show that’s unlike anything I’ve ever seen on television before. There are so few shows that come along that genuinely have no precedence. I mean, you’re going back to things like Twin Peaks or The Prisoner or Dennis Potter’s Singing Detective,” said Nolan, before adding he can’t wait “to catch up with the climax.”
While moderating the panel, Nolan also said that a show like The Curse could only be made during “the anarchy of the streaming era” and added that the tone is its true star.

Netflix’s new licensing deal with HBO includes all six seasons of the original show, but it doesn’t cover spin-off films nor a recent sequel series And Just Like That… The hit series is expected to hit Netflix in April in the U.S. and selected European markets.
Licensing is a big part of Netflix’s current strategy, and co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently urged studios to license more titles after several shows found a brand-new audience on this streaming platform.
“We’ve got a rich history of helping break some of TV’s biggest hits like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead… We can resurrect the show like Suits and turn it into a big pop culture moment and also generate billions of hours of joy for our members,” said Sarandos in a recent call to investors.
