The reboot would kick off 15 years after the original series ended its run, and it would center on a new team of tenacious detectives investigating cold cases across the Southwest. The new location would probably bring many changes our way, and introduce us to a new group of characters tackling unsolved homicides.

According to Deadline, no actors are attached to this project, but the reboot could potentially mark the comeback of several fan-favorite characters. Danny Pino could return as Scotty Valens, while Kathryn Morris could appear in a limited capacity, even though she hasn’t been approached yet.

This logline echoes the premise of the limited spin-off series Heroes Reborn, which ran for 13 episodes on NBC in 2015, and saw a group of ordinary people trying to save the world after learning they have extraordinary abilities.

King was confident they could expand this story even before Heroes Reborn came out, and he’s returning as the executive producer of the new reboot.

The sequel series will see Justin Russo (Henrie) trying to lead a normal, mortal life with his family. He’s drawn back into the Wizard World after his sister Alex (Gomez) asks him to mentor a young, powerful wizard-in-training Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown).

Gomez agreed to come back in a guest role, and she’ll also executive produce alongside Henrie, who’ll be credited as a series regular. In addition to Janice LeAnn Brown, the show’s new cast will also include Mimi Gianopulos as Justin’s wife Giada, plus Max Matenko and Alkaio Thiele as his sons Milo and Roman.

Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, confirmed they’ve given this sequel a series order after green-lighting the pilot back in January.

“Wizards of Waverly Place captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere. We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of Wizards,” said Davis in a statement.

Wizards will kick off production in Los Angeles next month, and it’s expected to premiere on Disney Channel and Disney+ later this year.

The potential Twilight series has been in early development at Lionsgate TV since April last year, and they seem to be making progress with this project. Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, dropped some hints about this franchise during a recent press conference and said, “We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”

Bringing Twilight back would make a lot of sense for Lionsgate since the original film franchise found a major box-office success, despite mixed reviews. The five films grossed over $5.28 billion worldwide before the franchise concluded its run with Breaking Dawn – Part 2 in 2012.

Twilight isn’t the only franchise that Lionsgate wants to expand right now. Burns also teased their plans for the future of the John Wick series, saying, “I think we’ll take one of our great action franchises starring Keanu Reeves, I think it’ll be a television series.”
